China has released an open-source operating system for quantum computers.

FIRST IN THE WORLD ‼️
✅ China has released an open-source operating system for quantum computers.

IBM and Google provide cloud access to quantum machines — but their operating systems cannot be downloaded.

China has taken a different step.

➡️ This week, the Origin Pilot system, developed by Origin Quantum, was opened for public download. For the first time in the world ‼️

What does this mean?
An operating system for a quantum computer is, in the world of classical computing, what Windows is. It manages the hardware, schedules tasks, and calibrates quantum bits (qubits).

Origin Pilot:
— Supports multiple hardware platforms, including superconducting qubits, trapped ions, and neutral atoms
— Features parallel task execution and automatic calibration
— Is open to research institutes, universities, and companies

What is China aiming for with this step?
In its 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–2030, China declared quantum technology a strategic priority. Origin Pilot is part of the technological infrastructure behind that plan.

The chief scientist of Origin Quantum describes it as a shift from “innovation behind closed doors” to building an open ecosystem.

Quantum computers are still far from replacing classical supercomputers. But standard tools and an open ecosystem could accelerate the development of the field.

Question: Will the open-source model in quantum technology reduce friction, or will it intensify competition?
